Bishop Michael Pham recently blessed the new diocesan Catholic cemetery, Good Shepherd, located in North County San Diego, which is expected to open its doors in the coming days.
During the Rite of Blessing, Bishop Michael Pham expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity to consecrate this sacred place, prepared with faith, love, and dignity to welcome our loved ones who have departed this world. Here, they will rest in the peace of Christ as we await with hope the day of the resurrection, when, by the grace of God, we will be called to share fully in eternal life, body and soul, with Him.
For us, as the Catholic Church, a cemetery is much more than a place of rest. It is a sacred space that expresses our faith in the dignity of every human person. We believe that the human body possesses a special dignity because it belongs to the person who was created in the image and likeness of God and who was a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Our faith also reminds us that death does not have the final word. Death is neither the end nor the annihilation of our existence. In Christ, we await with hope the resurrection of the dead and eternal life.
Even after death, our loved ones remain united to the Church. For this reason, cemeteries are places where the living can pray for the deceased, remember their lives, and keep alive the hope of the Christian faith. The Church encourages us to visit cemeteries and offer our prayers for those who have gone before us, recognizing also that burying the dead is one of the corporal works of mercy.
Our Diocese of San Diego is proud to present Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery, which will soon open its doors, together with Holy Cross Cemetery, as sacred places where we honor the dignity of every human life with faith, hope, and love.
In these sacred spaces, families will find compassionate care, spiritual support, and respectful burial services rooted in the teachings of the Church and in the promise of eternal life in Jesus Christ.
May these places always be spaces of prayer, consolation, and hope for our families. And as we remember those who have gone before us, may we also renew our hearts in the promise of Christ:
“I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live; and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”
— John 11:25–26

— Juan 11, 25-26
